What is the difference between Gelato and Ice cream?
Although the basics are the same, there are some subtle but important differences:
- Gelato is made with more milk and less cream (the opposite to ice cream) and therefore contains less fat.
- Gelato is churned at a slower rate than ice cream, resulting in less air incorporation and a denser, smoother texture.
- Gelato is served at around -12°C, compared to ice cream at -18°C
- Gelato is made with natural flavours versus ice cream which often uses powders and aromas to create flavour
- Artisan Gelato is stored for only days or weeks while Commercially made ice cream is stored for months or even years before serving
All these elements combine, resulting in a more intense flavour and more filling experience when eating Gelato!
Why don’t you offer all your flavours at once?
We are artisan producers and make all our gelato from scratch in our Shrewsbury gelateria. Everything from our nut butters and cookies to our curds and fruit coulis is made by us! We are proud of this – but it means we can only make in small batches. Our cabinet contains 10 flavours, and we carry additional items in our tower freezer so you should always be able to find a flavour to tempt you!
How often do you change your flavours in the cabinet?
We always offer our Madagascan Vanilla and Stracciatella. Aside from that, there are 3 non-dairy options, 2 classic/crowd pleasers, 1 nut, 1 fruit and 1 unusual/experimental flavour. Within this structure, 8 pans will rotate their flavours as they are sold out. In Summer we can change a single pan up to 8 times in a day, in Winter they tend to stay for a day or two.
How do I find out what flavours are on offer today?
Follow us on Instagram where we post daily about the flavours on offer – but be aware that these can change throughout the day, so the best way is to come and see us. If we don’t have your favourite, we will help you find a new flavour to try and are always happy to provide samples so you can be sure you will like your choice.
Do you cater for allergies and special dietary requirements?
Absolutely! We always offer 3 non-dairy gelato flavours in our cabinet. Even our cream-based gelato flavours can be gluten-free, nut-free, and/or egg-free. We even make gluten-free and dairy-free waffle cones! All our serving staff are knowledgeable about our products and can help you with any special requirements – please ask us. NOTE: All of our products are manufactured in our shop where we handle allergens including Dairy, Eggs, Gluten, Nuts, Sesame, Soy, Sulphites.
Why does it always smell so good in your shop?
Quite simply – Waffle Cones! In addition to making our own gelato from scratch, we work hard every day to make our delicious waffle cones as well! In Summer this is a full-time job to keep up with demand – and the smell is delicious.
Can you make a bespoke product for my special event?
Most definitely! Please ask us if you have a special event in mind. We have created bespoke flavours and products for several Shrewsbury restaurants, and we can make individual gelato desserts or gelato celebration cakes.
Where do you source your ingredients?
Our organic milk and cream is sourced from a local family dairy farm - Daisy Bank Dairy. Glen and his family look after their grass-fed cows in Montgomery. They are keen on regenerative agriculture, using farming methods that have minimal environmental impact and help to reverse the effects of air pollution. Nope – it’s just us! We are another Shrewsbury Independent. Gaia and Claire created the look and feel of the shop, create all the recipes and products and do all the social media marketing themselves.
